The MIM process has become an important part of the metal manufacturing industries. The technology is derived from the injection molding of ceramic powder and metal.
The MIM process is capable of producing extremely complex parts in medium and large quantities, ensuring all the precision such parts require, at a low cost.
The fine powder used in MIM technology shows low surface roughness after sintering, ensuring a high-quality surface.
MIM DIFFERENTIALS
The development of the tooling is the first and main step of the MIM process. The quality of the tool is essential for the entire process.
We develop the tooling internally, guaranteeing the required quality with excellent cost-effectiveness.
In this step, fine metal powders are mixed with binders to facilitate the injection into the mold. The raw material is then injected into the mold cavity at a certain temperature and under high pressure.
The obtained parts are called green parts and are 20% to 25% larger than the final part, which allows for shrinkage during sintering.
After the molding process, the polymeric binders are extracted using a solvent. At the end of this step, the part is ready for sintering.
The part is sintered by the diffusion method that allows the metal particles to be densified. The pores are removed in this process, causing the part to shrink 75% to 80% of its molded size. The part reaches its final dimension and geometry after sintering.
There is no need for any secondary operations to improve dimensional tolerance and surface finish. If any component requires further processing, it is done in this step.
After sintering, several secondary operations can be performed to finalize parts, such as: milling, threading, turning, heat treatment, calibration, surface coating.
The components must meet certain size and weight limitations to ensure an economic production and a competitive process.
Our engineering team is specialized in evaluating each component and studying ways to optimize the part to make the process economically feasible for our customers.
